Washington, D.C, District of Columbia Sep 2, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - The BAS Scholars Series returns online Tuesday, September 9 at 8 pm Eastern with the live presentation of After 1177 B.C.: The Survival of Civilizations by George Washington University renowned scholar, archaeologist, and author Dr. Eric H. Cline.
Prof. Clines talk stems from his compelling, recently published book on the years after 1177 B.C. when many of the Late Bronze Age civilizations of the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean lay in ruins--undone by invasion, revolt, natural disasters, famine, and the demise of international trade.
Those civilizations that failed to adjust disappeared from the world stage. Others transformed themselves, resulting in a new world order that included Israelites, Philistines, and Phoenicians. This recovery period brought world-changing innovations, such as iron usage and alphabet standardization, plus inventions, opportunities, and lessons for today.
Cline is Professor of Classics and Anthropology, Director of the Capitol Archaeological Institute, and former Chair of the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at GWU in Washington, DC. He is also an active field archaeologist with more than 30 seasons of excavations and surveys in Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Cyprus, and Greece.
The BAS Scholars Series is a quarterly program of the Biblical Archaeology Society, a nonprofit educational organization that bridges the gap between academia and the public in the field of biblical archaeology. Each hour-long talk via Zoom focuses on a subject of the speakers expertise in archaeology and the Bible.
General admission rate is $10 per event. Talks are free for All-Access Members of BAS. To register for this event, go to biblicalarchaeology.org/cline59.
