Addis Abeba, Ethiopia Aug 27, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - GreenLand Development Foundation (GDF) and Ethiopias Green Legacy Initiative: Partners in a Green Sustainable Future

The GreenLand Development Foundation (GDF), founded by Ethiopian-American environmental pioneer Gashaw Million Tree Man Tahir, has announced new initiatives that align with and strengthen Ethiopias Green Legacy Initiativeone of the worlds most ambitious reforestation programs.

Launched in 2019 by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the Green Legacy Initiative has planted over 32 billion trees in just four years, with a goal of 50 billion by 2030. On July 31, 2025, Ethiopia made global headlines by planting 700 million trees in a single day, mobilizing more than 14 million citizens to combat climate change, restore ecosystems, and secure food and water for future generations.

GDFs legacy of environmental restoration began in 2006, when Gashaw A. Tahir self-funded the planting of over one million trees near the source of the Nile River, uniting youth from diverse backgrounds for peace and ecological renewal. Mr. Tahir was honored as a National Green Hero by the President of Ethiopia in 2009.

For nearly two decades, Greenland Development Foundation (GDF) has championed landmark reforestation, sustainable farming, and community empowerment projects recognized by the Ethiopian government, the United Nations, and the White House.

On September 30, 2017, GDF partnered with the United Nations Association (UNA) in Sacramento, CA, USA.GDF carried out a treeplanting at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport on September 9, 2021.

Looking ahead, GDF plans to expand the We Plant Trees for Peace (#WePlantPeace) movement and employ thousands in environmental restoration work as well as establish an eco-friendly bio-village in Ethiopia. These efforts integrate climate-smart agriculture, youth empowerment, and international educational partnerships including with New Day Academy Schools of Technology, Environment, and Peace planned for Gambella, Ethiopia in 2026 and Los Angeles, CA in 2027.

By working together, we will not only feed, but also educate our people, said Gashaw Tahir. Ethiopias Green Legacy Initiative and the historic work of GDF prove that grassroots action, governmental leadership, and global partnership can cause environmental restoration, economic prosperity, and lasting peace. We can and will heal our land, our humanity, and our planet!
