About the Author

Mike Gill is a retired HR professional turned author and community radio director based in Oldham, East Manchester. Since 2006, he has written fiction and non-fiction works spanning memoir, management, and political commentary. His previous titles include Corruption, Human Resource Management Made Easy, Handling Discipline and Grievance in the Workplace, and Touch and Goa deeply personal account of his battle with COVID-19 after spending nearly a month in an induced coma. I was inspired by the way authoritarian and populist political figures and parties have increasingly inserted themselves into mainstream politics in Europe, the UK, and the US, says Mike. These movements often rely on fear, division, and the demonization of vulnerable groups. I wanted to write a story that reminds us how democracy, once lost, can be almost impossible to regainand how important it is to fight to protect it.

Although this book is about a serious subject area, it is full of characters that are flawed, complex and very human. There is humor, love, grief and struggle with lots of twists and turns. The story carries a message that democracy is fragile and to keep it, we need to fight for it, and it focuses on the importance of freedom of expression and speech to the very existence of democratic life. I want to emphasize that although this book is based in the UK, it translates with ease to present day America where there are very clear parallels.
